Suff·is·ti·cate
To suffocate someone with erroneous educational systems.
This installation artwork consists of 64 red scarfs tied with wires in a uniform, cube shape, hanging down from the ceiling. There are four red scarfs in each wire, four wires in each row, and four rows in total. The number 4 is considered an unlucky number in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word death. Each red scarf is hand tied to create individual shapes and wrinkles of its own, suspended in midair. The red scarfs are displayed upside down to mimic nooses around the necks symbolizing suffocation. The audience is welcomed to walk into or through the artwork. The uniformed shape of the artwork invites the audience to walk through it in straight lines. I believe this art installation express its language strongly to the audience through its materials, aesthetic and environment. I am pleased with its outcome.
